Manchester United started as Newton Heath in 1878. The club used to wear yellow and green shirts for their home games during the start of the football league in the late 1880s and the start of the 1890s. The Manchester United shirts were long sleeved and at that time there was no logo of the maker or sponsor.
In 1993, united won their first title in 26 years under Alex Ferguson. To mark the landmark achievement the club recreated the yellow and green halves shirts worn in the Newton Heath days for their away games. This was done to commemorate the humble beginnings of Manchester United football club.
Like the Manchester United side of today, Newton Heath used several shirts of various colors for United’s away matches. The shirts were white, blue, with black shorts and socks. In 1902, the club later came to be known by their name officially as Manchester United football club.
